POKÉMON TCG

How to complete a Pokémon collection without buying hundreds of booster packs

Read: 7 min

Booster packs can be part of the fun, but they are not the most controllable way to complete a set. The further you get, the more likely each opening is to add duplicates instead of solving your missing-card list.

The alternative is to turn your collection into a small system: know what you have, what you have spare and what you can offer to people who hold the cards you need.

1. Build a master list

Record collection number, name, language and version. Track normal, reverse, holo, promotional and other variants separately. An incomplete list causes duplicate purchases and confusion about what “owning” a card means.

2. Sort duplicates by usefulness

Not every duplicate belongs in the same trade. Group them by set and condition, and set aside cards you want to keep for play. Common cards are easier to move in lots; high-demand cards can be the key part of a specific trade.

3. Trade before opening more

When most missing cards are specific, check other collectors’ lists first. Offering three or four duplicates for one missing card can move you closer to your goal than buying another random sealed product.

Publish a have list and a want list. Include the exact set and accept only trades you can inspect calmly.

4. Spend only on difficult gaps

After trading, a few rare or scarce cards will remain. Set a budget for buying them individually and compare condition, language, shipping costs and seller reputation. Do not pay a large premium just because a checklist makes you want to finish today.

5. Update after every move

Mark incoming cards immediately and remove cards you no longer own. TradeMatches lets you keep duplicates and missing cards separate so every match has a clear purpose.

A sustainable goal

Completing a collection should not require accumulating sealed product you do not want. With a clean list, proper protection and a local trading network, you can make steady progress while enjoying the hobby for longer.
