How to tell if a card trade is fair: value, condition and price gaps

Read: 8 min

A fair trade does not mean both sides contain exactly the same number of cards. It means both people understand what they are giving, consider the important factors and accept the outcome without surprises.

The basic formula is to compare identity, condition, demand and context, not just add up the prices from one search result.

Compare equivalent cards

Confirm game, expansion, collection number, language, finish and version. A normal card and a promo, or a playable version and a collector variant, can look similar in a quick photo but have different markets.

Condition changes value

A Near Mint card should not be treated like a Lightly Played card without discussing it. Check the four corners, edges, surface and back. If a card has a defect, evaluate the trade using its real condition, not its most generous description.

Price is not the same as ease of trading

A 35-euro card may take longer to find an interested collector than three 12-euro cards. The three cards are not automatically better: it depends on whether you want them, whether their condition is good and whether you could move them again.

In a hypothetical example, one person offers a 35-euro card and receives three 12-euro cards. The nominal gap is one euro, but the trade is attractive only if the three incoming cards matter to the recipient.

Agree on a sensible adjustment

If there is a small difference, close it with an additional card, shipping costs, accessories or a card the other person has on their want list. Do not turn every cent into a long negotiation: local availability and trust also have value.

Checklist before saying yes

If both people can answer these questions, the trade has a solid basis even when it is not mathematically perfect.
