Language, edition and version: how to identify a TCG card before trading

A card name does not always identify the exact copy. The same character can appear in multiple sets, languages, finishes and products. Confirming those details before a trade prevents you from valuing a different card from the one you receive.

The five details to record

1. Game: Pokémon, Magic, Lorcana, Riftbound or another TCG.
2. Set: the expansion or product it belongs to.
3. Number: collection number and, when shown, the set total.
4. Language: Spanish, English, Japanese or another version.
5. Finish: normal, foil, reverse, promo, alternate art or another variant.

The number is often more reliable than the name

When a card has multiple artworks, find the printed number and compare it with a database or reference image. In a conversation, writing “card 123/198” is much more precise than using only the character name.

Language and local demand

Language can affect who wants a card, especially in communities that mainly play or collect one version. Do not assume another language has the same trade value: ask whether the other person accepts it before agreeing.

Similar-looking versions

Check rarity symbols, promotional stamps, texture, borders and text. A front photo can hide that a card is from a special collection or promotional product. If the difference affects value, show both sides and the relevant detail.
