TCG sleeves, binders and storage boxes: a card protection guide

The right protection depends on how you use each card. A deck card needs to be shuffled; a collection piece needs stability; and a trade card needs to travel without scratches or creases.

Separate daily-use protection from archival protection

Use play sleeves for cards that go in and out of a deck. For cards you do not want to handle, combine a fitted sleeve with an outer sleeve or rigid holder. Never force a card into a sleeve that is too tight.

Choose the right binder

• Side-loading binder: lowers the chance of cards sliding out.
• Fixed-page binder: lets you show a collection without removing cards.
• Trade binder: should be sturdy and never overloaded.

Do not fill a page until it bends. Constant pressure can mark corners and surfaces, especially on foil cards.

When to use boxes

Boxes work well for duplicates, play cards and large volumes. Use dividers by set or collection number, and leave room to remove one card without pushing the others. Keep boxes in the orientation their design supports and avoid stacking weight on top.

Moisture, heat and cleaning

Store cards in a dry place away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes. Do not clean a card with liquids or rub a foil surface. If a card becomes damp, separate it and let it stabilise without applying heat.

A transport rule

Take only the selection you need to a meetup. A light binder, a small box and an updated list are safer than carrying your entire collection. Check sleeves and holders after every event.
