Commander partner abilities and legal pairs
On this page
You can have two commanders when an ability or rule permits the pair and both cards meet its requirements. Being legendary is not enough. Partner, partner with, labelled partner variants, choose a Background and Doctor's companion have different conditions. Check both cards' current Oracle text before building around a pair.
Start with the ability authorising the pair
The comprehensive rules effective September 25, 2026 collect these abilities in section 702.124. They modify Commander deck construction before the game begins. Their purpose is to authorise particular pairs, rather than let you add any second legendary card that seems to work well with your first choice.
Identify the ability on each candidate and compare the complete requirements. A card can have more than one relevant authorisation, but you choose which to use when designating the pair. Combining permissions never allows three commanders. Shared themes, fictional backgrounds or colours do not replace a condition specified by the chosen ability.
Current Oracle text matters particularly for older printings. The present rules include partner abilities followed by a label, including Friends forever. An earlier printing may use different wording. Check both cards in the official catalogue instead of treating an old product photograph as the complete current rules reference for your pairing.
Ordinary partner
Ordinary partner allows a pair when both cards have that partner ability. It does not specify one name for the second card: you can consider other eligible candidates sharing the authorisation. This flexibility distinguishes ordinary partner from partner with and from the labelled variants that require a matching group.
Before buying a pair, verify the precise ability on both cards. A seller's description saying they can “have a partner” is insufficient. One card might have ordinary partner while the other has a variant requiring its own match. Both involving two commanders does not make those construction permissions compatible.
Ordinary partner also does not itself grant an enters-the-battlefield search for another card. That search belongs to a specific different variant. If your plan depends on finding the other commander in your library, first check where that card actually starts and what text permits the search. Do not assign the same in-game effect to every partner ability.
Partner with specifies a named pair
Partner with identifies a particular card. To designate two commanders through this variant, each card's corresponding ability must name the other. You cannot substitute another legendary card with similar colours or combine partner with and ordinary partner as though their different permissions supplied interchangeable halves of a pair.
This variant also includes an enters-the-battlefield ability that may let a player search their library for the named card. The search and construction permission are separate aspects. If both cards are your commanders, they begin in the command zone rather than sitting in the library waiting to be found by that ability.
A card with partner with can also appear in a list without both members being designated commanders. To resolve its entry ability, apply the actual text and check whether the named card is in the zone being searched. The keyword does not retrieve a partner from any zone or turn a search instruction into casting permission.
Labelled partner abilities require the same label
The current rules list partner—Character select, partner—Father & son, partner—Friends forever and partner—Survivors. Using one of these authorisations requires both cards to have the same labelled partner ability. Sharing the word partner before the label does not make different variants compatible.
A card with partner—Friends forever cannot pair with one bearing partner—Survivors through those two abilities. Nor should a labelled variant be automatically combined with ordinary partner. The chosen wording defines its compatible group. If a product brings together characters from several groups, examine each card rather than assuming every included legend can partner with every other.
Record the exact ability you are using in your deck notes. This makes later commander substitutions easier to check and prevents a replacement from silently changing legality. The keyword's label matters alongside the two card names. A pair that appears thematically appropriate still needs the same construction authorisation.
Choose a Background has a different structure
Choose a Background allows the card with that ability to share command with a legendary Background enchantment. It does not mean any legendary enchantment. The official Baldur's Gate mechanics explanation introduces the relationship between the creature and its Background and explains why the category is specific.
A legendary Background cannot become your commander through this permission unless you have also designated a commander with choose a Background. Likewise, you do not make two Backgrounds a pair by arbitrarily treating one as the permission source. The relationship has defined requirements, rather than being a general exception for any two legendary enchantments.
Read the Background's particular game effects after checking construction. Some affect what your commander creature does on the battlefield, but those benefits do not automatically change the requirements for designating the pair. First establish the legal relationship, then analyse what the specific enchantment contributes during play.
Doctor's companion has a specific creature-type condition
Doctor's companion permits pairing the creature with that ability and a legendary creature whose creature types are Time Lord Doctor, with no other creature types. This condition is stated in the rules. It is not a generic permission to pair with any card from the same fictional setting or any character whose name suggests a doctor.
Read the candidate's type line and the complete ability. A seemingly suitable name accompanied by other creature types may fail the requirement. Similarly, combining Doctor's companion with a card that only has ordinary partner does not allow one permission to stand in for the other. Apply the variant authorising that specific pair.
Where a candidate has several abilities allowing two commanders, choose one and check its full relationship. Do not use part of one variant's condition and part of another's. Multiple options can broaden the pairs worth evaluating; they do not remove each option's own requirements or increase the maximum number of commanders.
| Chosen authorisation | Pairing requirement |
|---|---|
| Ordinary partner | Both cards have ordinary partner |
| Labelled partner | Both have the same labelled variant |
| Partner with | Each correctly names the other |
| Choose a Background | The card with the ability plus a legendary Background enchantment |
| Doctor's companion | Companion plus a legendary Time Lord Doctor creature with no other creature types |
Deck size and combined colour identity
A Commander deck still contains exactly one hundred cards including both commanders. An ordinary construction beginning with both in the command zone leaves ninety-eight in the starting library. The second commander is not an accessory outside the deck that entitles you to add a 101st card.
Use both commanders' combined colour identities to check the other cards you may include. A legal pair can open additional colours, but it does not remove the colour-identity requirement for individual cards in the list. Pair compatibility and colour checking are separate: legal commanders can still lead an incorrectly constructed deck.
Replacing one commander requires revisiting both checks. The new card might lack the relevant partner variant or remove a colour needed by other cards. Keeping similar printed colours does not by itself prove that the replacement preserves the needed identity or the construction permission used for the original pair.
Track the commanders separately during play
Casting tax from the command zone is tracked per commander. Casting one does not automatically increase the additional cost of the other. Keep each card's cast count separate, especially after several zone changes when a shared verbal tally becomes difficult to reconstruct. Pairing does not merge their individual histories.
Commander combat damage is also tracked separately for the relevant loss threshold. Do not combine damage dealt by two different commanders as though they were one source. The cards remain separate objects rather than one permanent with a combined damage record, even when both attack the same opponent during a turn.
If an effect refers to your commander and could affect either one, check the choice allowed by the rule and the effect's exact wording. A singular reference does not automatically apply twice. Having two eligible objects and determining how many objects an effect affects remain separate questions that need to be answered together.
Frequently asked questions
Can partner with pair with ordinary partner?
These are distinct authorisations and cannot be combined into a pair. Both cards must satisfy the complete requirements of the selected variant.
Does Friends forever work with any partner card?
Under current wording, partner—Friends forever requires another card with the same variant. Check Oracle where your physical printing uses an older presentation of the ability name.
Does the second commander make a 101-card deck?
Both commanders count within the hundred cards. Ordinary construction begins with ninety-eight cards in the library and the two commanders in the command zone.
