Extra Deck and Side Deck are separate areas of the Main Deck in Yu-Gi-Oh!, but they serve different purposes. The Extra Deck contains monsters that you can summon under certain conditions; the Side Deck is used to adjust your setup between duels of a Match.

Extra Deck: access during the duel

Place appropriate monsters here. The rules specify a maximum of 15 cards, and these do not count toward the minimum of 40 of the Main Deck. Having a monster in the Extra Deck does not mean you can summon it without fulfilling its procedure. Keep the area separate and distinguishable according to the event's rules.

Side Deck: adjustments between duels

The Side Deck can contain between zero and 15 cards. After a duel of a Match, you can exchange cards with the Main Deck and, when applicable, with the Extra Deck, respecting the sizes and legal compositions. It is not a second hand from which you can steal during a normal duel.

The copy count is shared

The general limit of three copies with the same name applies when adding Main, Extra, and Side Deck together. A limited or prohibited card reduces the allowed number even further. For example, two copies in the Main and two in the Side add up to four: it is not enough to look at each pile separately.

Three piles, three functions

When preparing a Yu-Gi-Oh! deck, place the Main Deck, the Extra Deck, and, if used, the Side Deck on the table. The first is the deck from which you draw during the duel. The second stores types of monsters that can be summoned from that area when you fulfill the corresponding procedure. The third contains cards to adjust your setup between duels of a Match. Physically separating them allows you to detect construction errors before shuffling. A monster that should start in the Extra Deck does not add to the minimum of 40 cards of the Main Deck; a card from the Side Deck also does not appear by itself in your hand during the first duel.

Start with the Main Deck

In the standard TCG format, the Main Deck must have between 40 and 60 cards. This range is counted without adding the Extra or the Side. For example, a list with 38 main cards, 15 Extra, and 15 Side does not meet the minimum of the Main, although the total physical cards are 68. A list with 40 main cards meets the main size even if you decide to leave the other two piles empty. This separation is one of the easiest checks to make and one of the most common when copying a list from an image. If an application shows «70 cards in total», you need to check the breakdown, not decide based on the total added.

Playing 40 is not mandatory if your strategy needs more cards. The ordinary maximum is 60. However, adding options reduces the frequency with which you will draw a specific piece. Before moving from 40 to 50, identify which new cards you need and what situation each one covers. A card that seems good only because you already have it may compete for space with those that make the plan work. This is a decision of consistency, not a restriction of the rules. Avoid confusing «legal with 60» with «as likely to open a combination».

What goes into the Extra Deck

The Extra Deck allows up to 15 cards and can be empty. Gather there the monsters whose type corresponds to that area according to current rules, such as Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Link. The fact that a card is there does not give you permission to summon it for free: each type and each card has its own conditions. If a monster requires materials or a procedure, verify that your Main Deck can actually provide them. In an online list, a full Extra Deck may include options you will never be able to use with the main cards you own.

The 15-card limit applies to the Extra Deck as a whole, not to each monster family. Ten Fusion and seven Link sum to 17, exceeding the maximum. Eight Synchro and seven Xyz sum to 15. If you change a card to test a new line of play, remove another to keep the limit. Do not put extra cards in the Side just to access them during the same duel: the Side is not a second Extra available on the table. The initial zone determines what options are really available in the duel you are about to start.

What is the Side Deck for

The Side Deck also allows between zero and 15 cards, but its moment of use is different. After a duel of a Match, you can exchange cards with the Main Deck or the Extra Deck according to the rules to adapt your plan to the opponent. You cannot take a card from the Side during a duel simply because you just needed it. If an event is played as a single duel, consult its rules before assuming the Side works as in a traditional Match. The utility of the Side comes from observing what the opponent does and preparing responses between games.

Imagine your Main has 40 cards and your Side has 15. After the first duel, you want to incorporate three cards from the Side into the Main. Remove three from the Main to maintain the expected size and the number of cards in the Side. You can also exchange an option from the Extra for one from the Side when the rules allow it, respecting the limit of each area. Note the exchanges to return the deck to its initial configuration before the next Match. Losing track of a small card can leave 39 main cards or a Side with 16, even though the strategic plan is correct.

A copy limit spans the three piles

The general limit of three copies of the same name is checked by combining Main, Extra, and Side. It does not reset because you place a copy in each area. If you have two copies of a card in the Main and two in the Side, the total is four, and you must remove one. The list of Prohibited and Limited cards can reduce the allowed number even further, down to zero. Check the current list for the format and the tournament date. A photo of a used deck from months ago may show quantities that were legal then but not now.

A practical example: a card limited to one copy cannot appear once in the Main and once in the Side. Although neither area individually repeats the card, the set carries two. If it is Prohibited, it cannot be hidden in the Side to use it only against a specific opponent. When reviewing a list, group all entries by name before checking the corresponding limit. This order avoids confusing the number of rows in the inventory with the actual number of allowed copies.

What changes between duels and what remains

The Side modifies the composition for the next duel of the same Match; it does not add unlimited capacity. After exchanging, each area must respect its limits and the Side must keep its size. Before starting a new Match, return to the initial list recorded. If you are playing in a tournament, the event's rules and the deck sheet may require additional presentation details. A simple note with «three out, three in» avoids forgetfulness. Do not rely on remembering the change when you are focused on the next round.

Think also about the purpose of each card in the Side. A very specific response may be worth a spot if it resolves a difficult confrontation; five responses that do the same may not. The decision is strategic, but the physical control is regulatory: knowing what is in the Main, what in the Extra, and what is reserved for later. Consistent foundations and clearly identified piles help ensure a quick exchange does not end with a monster from the Extra inside the Main.

Common errors when copying a recipe

The first is adding the 15 from the Extra to the minimum of 40 from the Main. The second is believing the Side can be consulted as a tool during the duel. The third is carrying 15 cards of each type of Extra, exceeding the total limit. The fourth is distributing four copies of the same name across areas. The fifth is omitting the list of Prohibited and Limited cards. To avoid this, rewrite the recipe in three columns and note the totals at the bottom: Main between 40 and 60, Extra up to 15, and Side up to 15. Check the added copies and current restrictions afterward.

If you buy a card because it appears in the Extra of a list, check the materials, the summoning method, and the event's format before buying. If you buy a card for the Side, ask yourself in what confrontation it will enter and which will leave. These two questions prevent purchases that do not improve the deck. The Extra and the Side are powerful areas, but they serve different functions. Understanding them turns a published list into a useful tool rather than a copied inventory you don't know how to use.

A two-minute check

Spread the three piles on the table and count each separately. Verify that the monsters in the Extra are in the right place, and that the Side contains only the cards intended for future exchanges. Add copies of the same name across all areas. Consult the official list of restrictions for that tournament and recount after any change. In a practice session, simulate a duel and a Side exchange: if you do not know which card to remove or lose track of the total, the presentation is not ready. This specific test resolves more doubts than looking at a total number on a photograph.
